In addition to the Prize, the organization also organizes public events to introduce readers to African writers and assist up-and-coming writers in Africa in breaking into mainstream publishing through the yearly Caine Prize writers’ workshop, which is held in a different African nation every year.

Caine Prize Award – Overview

The Caine Prize Award for African Writing is held annually recognizing published short stories by an African writer. The award took its name after the late Sir Michael Caine, the former Chairman of Booker plc. Sir Michael Caine was Chairman of the ‘Africa 95’ arts festival in Europe and Africa in 1995.

After his death, his friends and colleagues came together and decided to establish a prize of £10,000 to be awarded every year in his memory. Since the inception of the award, the stories written are published yearly alongside the Prize’s shortlisted stories in the annual Caine Prize Anthology by Cassava Republic Press in the UK and publishers in African countries.

Financial Benefits of the Caine Prize Award

  • The winner will be awarded a cash prize of up to £10,000
  • In addition to the Prize, the winner and shortlisted writers will receive an invitation to participate in events in Africa, London, and other locations (with the availability of resources).
