For a prolonged period, the action movie scene seemed to be in a dire state, overwhelmed with a series of unremarkable, CGI-heavy films that lacked lasting impact. The once-celebrated era brought to life by iconic series such as Die Hard and Rambo appeared to be a distant memory, as audiences were inundated with an array of superhero sagas and battles between massive robots.

While these themes are not inherently flawed, they often seem too similar to each other, lacking distinctiveness. Unexpectedly, and from seemingly out of the blue, a beacon of excellence emerged in the action film landscape. This film stood out for its raw intensity, and immediate appeal, and it quickly established itself as not just the most impressive action movie in recent memory but also as a transformative force for the genre.

This groundbreaking film was none other than John Wick, helmed by seasoned stunt professionals Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, with the iconic Keanu Reeves leading the cast. The premise, which involves a retired hitman embarking on a vendetta because of his dog’s death, might seem far-fetched on the surface. However, it served as the perfect premise for an impeccably crafted action masterpiece.

Initially gaining attention through word of mouth, John Wick evolved into a flourishing franchise, spawning three highly praised sequels and a prequel series titled The Continental. With a fifth installment in the works and plans for an expanded universe, the John Wick series has undeniably redefined the action film genre.

Release Date

Ballerina is scheduled for release on Friday, June 7, 2024, positioning it at the heart of the summer blockbuster season. It will debut alongside Warner Bros and New Line’s horror film, The Watchers, setting the stage for a competitive opening weekend.

Will the Film Be Released In Theaters or On Streaming

Ballerina is set to continue the tradition of its John Wick predecessors by making its debut as a theatrical release.

Stars and Characters

For enthusiasts of the John Wick saga, the most thrilling update might be the announcement of several original cast members making their comeback in Ballerina. Notably, Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as the iconic action hero John Wick, alongside Ian McShane as the astute manager of the Continental, Winston, and Anjelica Huston as the formidable ballerina assassin mentor, The Director.

Additionally, Ballerina will feature the last film appearance of Lance Reddick as Charon, the loyal and composed concierge, following his unfortunate passing due to heart disease in March 2023, just before the premiere of John Wick Chapter 4.

In a conversation with Steve Weintraub from Collider, McShane hinted at the significance of their roles in Ballerina, together with Reddick and Reeves, adding a layer of anticipation for fans.

Plot of Ballerina

The released plot summary for Ballerina has been relatively concise, revealing it centers around “A young female assassin who seeks revenge against those who murdered her family.” However, Keanu Reeves offered additional insights into the upcoming project while promoting John Wick: Chapter 4 at CCXP 2022, providing fans with a more detailed glimpse into the storyline:

“[she is a] woman who has some very difficult circumstances and who’s looking for revenge. Whoever killed her- someone killed her father. Who could that be? And so it’s her journey for actually understanding her past. She lost her father at a young age, and she doesn’t really know what happened. Only that someone came into the house and killed her father, who had a tattoo. And as we know in John Wick, if you have a tattoo, something’s going on.”

Reeves disclosed that Ballerina is set in the timeline between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, filling in the narrative gap between these two installments.

The intriguing idea of ballerina assassins might ring a bell for fans, as it was briefly introduced in Chapter 3, during a moment when John Wick seeks help from an enigmatic character from his past, known as The Director (played by Anjelica Huston). In the unique world of John Wick, appearances can be deceiving; what seems to be a simple ballet school is actually a cover for a rigorous training ground for assassins serving various underworld factions.

Keanu Reeve’s Comment on the Film

Keanu Reeves’ comments suggest the addition of a murder mystery element to the narrative, focusing on the protagonist Rooney (portrayed by Ana de Armas) as she unravels the identity of her family’s murderer. This storyline could potentially link to events in Chapter 3 where the High Table executes her fellow dancers and the Director, along with the death of her father, prompting speculation about the identity of the antagonist.

Makers and Creators of Ballerina

As the main franchise director, Chad Stahelski dedicates his focus to John Wick: Chapter 4 and Chapter 5, as well as the forthcoming Highlander remake and Ghosts of Tsushima adaptation, Len Wiseman, renowned for directing the initial two installments of the Underworld series, will take the helm for Ballerina. Shay Hatten, the screenwriter behind John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, originally penned Ballerina as an independent project before it was adapted to become part of the John Wick universe.

This approach mirrors instances like Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) and 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), where standalone scripts were modified to align with existing franchises. Emerald Fennell, an Academy Award Winner for Promising Young Woman, collaborated with Hatten to refine the screenplay for the John Wick context.

The Film’s Production Team

The film’s production team is completed by notable talents including cinematographer Romain Lacourbas, known for his work on The Witcher; production designer Philip Ivey, who brought his expertise to District 9; costume designer Tina Kalivas, recognized for her contributions to Australia; and casting director Olivia Scott-Webb, celebrated for her role in casting The Queen’s Gambit.

McShane reportedly praised the creative team behind the film, saying:

“They tend to make me sound a bit like an English dictionary sometimes on John Wick. They’re great writers — Michael [Finch] and Shay [Hatten] on those. We go through it, I check with them, and we cut it down to whatever. Len had conferred with Chad [Stahelski], so I think there’s a continuity from the other Wick movies. So it should be very enjoyable.”
