The initiative is a key component of the 20-year Power Purchase Agreement established in March 2023 between Africa Data Centres and DPA Southern Africa, a joint venture between Distributed Power Africa and French utility company EDF. The partnership aims to develop hybrid energy solutions for clients across Africa.

The primary objective of the solar farm in the Free State is to supply renewable energy to Africa Data Centres’ facilities, starting with the CPT1 carrier-neutral data centre in Cape Town.

This initiative comes amidst recent warnings from analysts regarding increased regulation and demands transparency regarding energy and water usage in African data centres.

Hardy Pemhiwa, President and Group CEO of Cassava Technologies emphasized the strategic importance of integrating solar power into data centre operations, highlighting its role in advancing environmental sustainability.

Emphasizing Africa Data Centres

Tesh Durvasula, CEO of Africa Data Centres, reiterated the commitment to powering all data centres with clean, renewable energy sources, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality.

The project’s first phase involves constructing a 12MW solar infrastructure to power the Cape Town data centre, with subsequent phases extending to Johannesburg data centres.

Durvasula addressed the growing scrutiny faced by data centres worldwide for their reliance on grid power and renewables, emphasizing Africa Data Centres’ proactive approach to address this issue by generating renewable energy and reducing strain on the local grid.

Implementing Innovative Energy Solutions

Nawfal El Fadil, CEO of DPA SA, underscored the collaborative effort towards carbon neutrality, highlighting the innovation, expertise, and collective determination required to overcome sustainability challenges.

The partnership between Africa Data Centres and DPA SA aims to pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future in South Africa through the implementation of innovative energy solutions.
