The platform, YouScribe, is a digital reading library headquartered in France and boasts a user base of over a million. The company has now joined forces with Digital Virgo and MTN to introduce its services in Ghana.

YouScribe, a digital library hailing from France, has teamed up with Digital Virgo and MTN to introduce its services in Ghana. In this collaboration, YouScribe is partnering with Ghanaian publishers like Adaex Edu. Others include Subsaharan Publishers, and African Books Collective to diversify its collection with local content tailored for the Ghanaian audience.

Juan Pirlot de Corbion, the CEO of YouScribe, expressed the significance of this move. Thus stating, “The launch of YouScribe in Ghana is an important and ambitious step in our aspiration to connect cultures through a multilingual digital library featuring authors from all over the continent.”

How the Platform Will Work In Ghana

Prospective readers in Ghana will have access to the extensive digital catalogue for a daily subscription fee of GH₵ 0.75 (approximately US$0.06). This subscription unlocks nearly 200,000 English-language ebooks, numerous press titles, and thousands of audiobooks and comic books.

Other Countries to Welcome YouSCribe

Ghana now joins South Africa as the second English-speaking country to welcome YouScribe. The platform is already established in around 11 French-speaking African nations. And this is including Tunisia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Morocco, Guinea, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mali.

According to Statista, Ghana’s ePublishing market is projected to generate US$35.49 million in revenue in 2024, with a 4.09% annual growth rate. This growth is attributed to the increasing number of local authors utilizing digital platforms to share their stories globally. The market’s reader base is expected to reach 6.1 million by 2027.

The Partnership with MTN and YouScribe

Renaud Ganascia, Digital Virgo’s Africa Head of Sales, affirmed that the partnership with MTN and YouScribe will enable them to reach a vast number of mobile customers across the continent.

“This is a service that, beyond the engagement it generates, is particularly close to our hearts for its social and societal impact,” he said.

Internet Users in Ghana

In the midst of these advancements, a report from Statista unveiled that in the third quarter of 2023, a staggering 99.7 percent of Internet users in Ghana possessed smartphones. Additionally, as of January 2024, the country boasted an Internet penetration rate of approximately 70%.
