Every year, an upcoming filmmaker from anywhere in the world who submits the most compelling pitch for a director-led documentary that meets the essential requirements listed below wins the Film & TV Funding Award.
The Whickers Film & TV Funding Award is regarded as one of the biggest documentary awards in the world, it has a £100,000 main prize and a £20,000 development award for the runner-up.

The 2024 edition of the Whickers Film & TV Funding Award for Filmmaker Worldwide, comes with a main award worth £100,000 and up to £20,000 development award for the runner-up.
Eligibility Criteria for The Whickers Film & TV Funding Award 2024
- The Whickers Film & TV Funding Award is open to filmmakers across the globe. international filmmakers are encouraged to apply
- Must be the first over 50-minute documentary directed or co-directed by the filmmaker or filmmakers;
- Projects must be in the late development to early production stage when applying;
- An individual cannot receive award money. Therefore, to create a dedicated project account for their film, applicants must either: demonstrate the viability of their business; have a fiscal sponsor on board; have a production company nominated; or affirm that, if they are shortlisted, they are willing to establish a limited company and dedicated project account.
- When applying, a maximum of six minutes of original taster video must be sent;
- It must be accessible to an English-speaking audience, whether it is subtitled in English or not;
- When applying, candidates must have an executive producer on board;
- Applicants that make the shortlist must be able to travel to Sheffield, UK, in June to present their film at Sheffield DocFest (The Whickers will pay for reasonable travel and lodging);
- Applicants who have additional funding sources over £300,000 at the time of submission are not eligible.
- They request that the budget for your 50+ minute documentary film not exceed £400,000 at the time of application.
