The Artifact news app is being shut down by the co-founders of Instagram. Just under one year after its headline launch, the fledging new app is reportedly going away.
The Artifact News App Is Being Shut Down
Artifact, the news app that was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, Instagram co-founders, is now shutting down just a year after its launch. The app made use of an AI-driven approach to suggest news that users might just like to read, but it however seems that it didn’t catch on with just enough people for the Artifact team to continue making and creating the app.
“We have built something that a core group of users love, but we have concluded that the market opportunity isn’t big enough to warrant continued investment in this way,” CEO Kevin Systrom in a blog post stated. The app as you should know is starting to wind down today. Users on the other hand can no longer add new comments or posts, and Artifact will still allow you to read news “through the end of February.”
Artifact since Its Launch
Since the launch of the app at the end of January 2023, Artifact has reportedly added a host of new and interesting features, such as AI-powered article summaries, the ability to effectively comment on articles within Artifact, as well as the ability to mark articles as clickbait (and then rewrite them making use of AI).
The app is broadened from just focusing on news simply by allowing people to post links to share cool stuff on the web as well as a Twitter-like posts feature. Systrom however reveals that features such as comments and posts required “a fair amount of moderation and oversight” that it also does not have the staff to support.
What Will Happen To the Team Behind the News App
Systrom has stated that the team of eight people who are working on Artifact “will go our separate ways.” He also adds that he is “personally excited to continue building new things” and reveals that the opportunities for new ideas in the realm of AI “seem limitless.”
