The Muhammad Ali Center, located in Louisville, Kentucky, proudly unveils its tenth annual Shining a Light International Photography Contest (2024 edition). This prestigious event, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and #5 (Gender Equality), celebrates the prowess and challenges faced by women in sports globally.
Photographers, whether seasoned professionals or enthusiastic amateurs are encouraged to submit captivating photographs that illuminate the diverse facets of women athletes’ experiences, both in competition and adversity on an international scale.
Prizes and Benefits
The Muhammad Ali Center offers an impressive monetary prize award. Acknowledging excellence, the 1st Prize winner will be awarded $1000, the 2nd Prize secures $750, and the 3rd Prize takes home $500.
The selected photographs will not only grace the exhibition but also contribute to a documentary-style narrative unveiled on International Women’s Day.
All the monetary prizes will be awarded in the form of a digital Swift transfer.

“Shining a Light: Women Athletes”
This year’s themes encompass a broad spectrum including:
- Disparities in Sporting Facilities and Equipment: This focuses on unveiling the stark contrasts between women’s sporting facilities and equipment in comparison to their male counterparts.
- Women Athletes in Action
- Gender Inequities Amid Sociopolitical Climates
- Sports as an Empowerment Tool
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to participate in the Shining a Light International Photography Contest 2024, Candidates must meet the requirements below:
- All photographers are invited, regardless of experience level.
- Photographers who are under eighteen (18) must include a parental consent document with their entry.
- You consent to submitting no more than one image per submission. If more than one photo is sent, only the first will be taken into consideration; the other(s) will be thrown out.
- You consent to the Muhammad Ali Center using your name and photo on its websites, as well as publications and/or social media posts, for an undefined amount of time, provided that proper credit is given.
- Participants guarantee that the images they provide are authentic and don’t violate the rights of any third parties.
- Candidates who currently reside in one of the nations listed on the most recent United States Department of the Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control, Sanctions Programs, and Country Information list, are not eligible to be awarded the prize money from this contest. Nevertheless, you are still welcome to submit photos for this contest.
