Designed to empower early career researchers and global health professionals, the grant facilitates clinical or scientific research and fieldwork. This support can be provided either as independent projects or as integral components of more extensive endeavors.

With a history spanning over 40 years, the grants program has witnessed substantial growth. Since 2017, it has awarded over 800 grants across 66 countries, covering various areas of tropical medicine and global health, including infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, neglected tropical diseases, and external factors influencing global health.

Grant Details

The maximum RSTMH Early Career Grant award is GBP 5,000, inclusive of any applicable taxes on purchases.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants may be based anywhere globally and of any nationality.

  • They must not have previously received research funding exceeding £5,000 in their name.
  • Applicants need a well-defined research plan for which they seek support.
  • Affiliation with an organization is preferred, though applications from unaffiliated or non-employed individuals will be considered.
  • Permission from RSTMH is required for any transfer to another institution during the award, and such transfers are only approved in exceptional circumstances.
  • Adequate supervision, ongoing throughout the project, and access to necessary insurance for research are mandatory.
  • Applicants must hold a registered bank account accepting GBP, with funds paid into their account (not institutional).
  • They should not have received a prior RSTMH grant, submitted more than one application per year, or acted as an RSTMH global assessor in the same year.
  • Funds are not granted for ongoing or completed projects, and applicants should not be named supervisors or referees on RSTMH grant applications in the same year.

Applicants are encouraged to incorporate costs that promote diversity, inclusion, and community participation in their projects.
