The RICE Business Plan Competition (RBPC), is hosted and organized by the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship and has flourished since its inception over 23 years ago. Applications for the 2024 edition open from December 13, 2023, to January 31, 2024. Aspiring entrepreneurs are encouraged to submit their business plans and vie for financial prizes.

From a modest beginning of nine teams vying for a $10,000 prize in 2001, RICE Business Plan Competition (RBPC) has transformed into the largest and richest student startup competition globally, now offering over $1 million in cash and prizes to 42 competing teams.

Benefits of RBPC Startup Competition

Each of the 42 participating startups for the RBPC, walks away with a minimum of $950 in prizes, as a reward for their efforts. In addition, the competition boasts an impressive range of prizes, including equity-free cash, investments from active investors, and invitations from Houston accelerators with contingent investment prizes.

Prizes Breakdown

  • 1st Place Overall: $350,000 investment by GOOSE Capital
  • 2nd Place Overall: $100,000 investment by Rice University
  • 3rd Place Overall: $50,000 investment by Rice University
  • 4th-7th Place Overall: $5,000 cash each

Semi-Final Round Prizes

  • Flight 1, 2, 3 (3rd Place): $2,000
  • Flight 1, 2, 3 (4th Place): $1,500
  • Flight 1, 2, 3 (5th Place): $1,250

Startups who do not make the semi-finals will be awarded $950 each.

Eligibility Criteria for RBPC Startup Competition

For a startup to be eligible, it must fulfill the criteria below:

  • Must be Student-driven, student-created, or student-managed
  • The startup should have a minimum of two current student founders or management team members
  • At least one student is a current graduate degree-seeking student From a college or university worldwide
  • Start-up must have raised less than $250,000 in equity capital before July 1, 2023
  • Generated revenue of no more than $100,000 in any 12-month period before July 1, 2023
  • Seeking funding or capital
  • A potentially viable investment opportunity
