The grant specifically targets women or non-binary reporters who are exploring subcultures in a broad sense, encompassing what Kim referred to as “the undercurrents of rebellion.” Kim passionately advocated for more women to venture into the world, actively engaging with life’s experiences, and the Kim Wall Memorial Fund seeks to honor her legacy by enabling and encouraging such endeavors.

About  Kim Wall

Kim Wall (1987-2017) was a highly esteemed journalist who excelled in various mediums such as print, video, radio, and long-form. She dedicated her reporting skills to covering topics related to gender, popular culture, identity, and foreign policy, extensively traveling to countries like China, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Haiti, North Korea, India, and the Marshall Islands. Her exceptional stories and films were featured in renowned publications including Harper’s Magazine, New York Times, Foreign Policy, Atlantic, TIME, Slate, Vice, and Guardian.

Kim Wall held impressive academic credentials, having graduated from both the Columbia School of Journalism and the London School of Economics. In collaboration with Mansi Choksi, she conducted an investigative report on the involvement of women in conflict in Sri Lanka through the 2016 Reporting Grants for Women’s Stories initiative. Tragically, Kim Wall’s life was cut short on August 10, 2017, while she was working on a report in Copenhagen, Denmark.
