The fellowship aims to provide a multidisciplinary context for advanced research and training that aligns with the research agenda of the selected thematic program.

The JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme focuses on sustainability research and provides promising researchers with the opportunity to conduct advanced research in cooperation with the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS).

Hosted at domestic universities and research institutions across Japan, the fellowship is designed for candidates who have completed their doctorates in the past six years, excluding the period of maternity/paternity leave, and possess professional and/or research experience.

Research areas

Fellows are expected to conduct research in one of the following thematic areas under the supervision of the host researcher, with the proposed research incorporating gender issues within the research agenda:

  • Governance for Sustainable Development (GSD)
  • Biodiversity & Society (BDS)
  • Water & Resource Management (WRM)
  • Innovation & Education (IVE)

Costs

The fellowship covers the following:

  • Airfare: A round-trip air ticket based on JSPS regulations.
  • Maintenance allowance: JPY 362,000 per month.
  • Miscellaneous: A settling-in allowance of JPY 200,000 and overseas travel insurance.

Note: If a fellow is already living in Japan or obtains resident status before the fellowship begins, the air ticket to Japan and settling-in allowance will not be provided. A research grant (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research) is available to cover cooperative research-related expenses.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a doctoral degree at the time of application (received on or after April 2, 2018, with the period of maternity/paternity leave subtracted, counting 4 weeks as a month) or be scheduled to receive a doctoral degree before the fellowship begins.
  • Be citizens of countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan (Palestinian and Taiwanese researchers are eligible).
  • Japanese nationals (including dual citizenship holders) and permanent residents of Japan are not eligible. Those who have previously been awarded a Standard or Pathway Fellowship under the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan are also ineligible.

Application requirements

Interested and eligible candidates must fill out the Application Form by March 10, 2024 (23:59 JST). The form must be completed in English.

Applicants are responsible for securing a host researcher at a Japanese institution before applying, as the UNU-IAS Fellowship Committee cannot support this process. UNU-IAS researchers are not eligible to become host researchers.
