World Population Day is an event that takes place annually on the 11th of July.  This day aims to create awareness about global population issues. It was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, and it was inspired by the public interest in Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987, which is the date when the world’s population reached five billion people.

World Population Day

After World Population Day was established, the event was continued by the United Nations and the first event was observed on the 11th of July, 1990 in about 90 countries.

World Population Day

World Population Day is observed to increase the world’s knowledge of different population issues, like the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, and human rights. Dr. K.C. Zachariah, who worked as a Senior Demographer at the World Bank, proposed the day when the population reached five billion.

On World Population Day, different advocates from around the world will reach out to leaders, policymakers, grassroots organizers, institutions, and others to help make reproductive health and rights a reality for all. However, in November 2020, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), with the governments of Kenya and Denmark, organized a high-level conference in Nairobi to quicken efforts to achieve these unmet goals.
