Eskom is About Halfway Through the Prepaid Meter Update

With the help of its retail partners, Eskom has reached three million households in its “key revision number rollover” initiative. The project has to be finished by November to upgrade the 6.8 million prepaid meters in the nation to accept a new set of larger recharge tokens.

Monde Bala, group executive for distribution at Eskom, said in a statement on Friday, “Reaching this milestone of recoding three million ‘key change tokens’ gives impetus to our commitment to ensure that all our 6.8 million prepaid electricity meters are recorded before the deadline of 24 November 2024.”

“We are grateful to our customers for embracing the do-it-yourself process. Our teams are available to promptly assist those customers who are experiencing challenges and have logged queries with reference numbers.”

The decision to customize the prepaid token’s length was made administratively, according to a prior statement from Eskom, because the permutations on the earlier sets were almost at their end.

Extra Recode Token

Customers have been informed that purchasing electricity would remain the same, regardless of their preferred channel, even though the length of prepaid tokens has changed.

Updates are made on a regional basis, and eventually, when a consumer purchases a recharge token, they will also receive an extra recode token. Eskom now suggests the following actions for clients:

To recharge your meter, enter the first 20 digits of the recode token and wait for it to be accepted; the second 20 digits of the recode token and wait for it to be accepted; and, most importantly, the 20 digits of the purchased token.

Reprogramming of meters is done at no additional cost to prepaid users, according to Eskom.
