Cast and Characters of the Movie

“Back To Black” features a talented cast, with Marisa Abela from “Industry” portraying Amy Winehouse. Joining her is Jack O’Connell, known for his role in “Ferrari,” who will play Amy’s former husband Blake Fielder-Civil. Eddie Marsan from “Fair Play” takes on the role of her father Mitch Winehouse, and Lesley Manville, who appeared in “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris,” portrays her grandmother, Cynthia Winehouse. This ensemble of actors brings a mix of experience and fresh talent to the film, promising a compelling portrayal of Winehouse’s life and legacy.

Sam Taylor-Johnson, the director of the film via an official press release stated that: “Discovering a talent like Marisa Abela is akin to finding gold dust. The moment she looked into the lens at her first audition I knew she was the perfect actor to play Amy Winehouse. She put in an enormous amount of work, and attention to every detail and she trained daily for hours to be able to sing throughout the entire movie. She doesn’t impersonate Amy, she inhabits her.”

When Was the Movie Filmed?

“Back to Black” commenced its principal photography in January 2023, capturing the essence of Amy Winehouse’s journey to stardom by filming in various iconic locations across London. These sites are significant as they are where Winehouse developed into the globally cherished artist known today. Key scenes were shot at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, a venue pivotal to Winehouse’s early career.

It was at this renowned jazz club where she began performing live, refining her now legendary sound. Interestingly, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club also holds personal significance for the film’s director, Sam Taylor-Johnson, as it was where she first witnessed Winehouse’s live performance. This connection adds a layer of authenticity and personal investment to the film’s direction.
