The 2024 edition of the YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship, is inviting young African leaders with a passion for driving positive change in their community.  The Fellowship offers an incredible opportunity to up to 700 young leaders from across Africa.

About Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI)

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) is a groundbreaking effort by the United States government to invest in the next generation of African leaders. With nearly 1 in 3 Africans falling between the ages of 10 and 24, and 60% of the population below the age of 35, the need for strong and results-oriented leaders is evident.

YALI aims to address this by promoting three core themes: leadership, entrepreneurship, and public management.

Eligibility Criteria for YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship

Applicants for the Mandela Washington Fellowship 2024, must meet the criteria below:

  • Age between 25 and 35 (applicants aged 21-24 may be considered exceptionally)
  • Not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Applicants must be legally free to receive a United States J-1 visa
  • Not affiliated with the U.S. Government
  • Proficient in English
  • Citizens or residents of eligible African countries
  • Fellows are not allowed to bring dependents, including spouses and children, during the fellowship.

Evaluation Criteria for YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship

Applications for the fellowship will be evaluated based on several criteria:

  • Demonstrated leadership and accomplishment in various fields
  • The Candidate’s commitment to public or community service or volunteerism
  • Ability to collaborate in diverse groups and respect differing opinions
  • Strong social and communication skills
  • Positive and flexible attitude
  • Relevant professional experience and concrete goals for applying lessons learned
  • Commitment to returning to Sub-Saharan Africa and contributing to the community
