You can now submit your application for the Victor K. McElheny Award. The award acknowledges exceptional reporting on science, public health, technology, or environmental matters within the local or regional context. Recipients will be granted a $10,000 award and celebrated at a ceremony organized by the Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT.
This prestigious award is made available through the gracious backing of Victor K. McElheny and his wife, Ruth McElheny, along with the support of the Rita Allen Foundation.

Annually, the award recognizes a singular submission, whether it be a series or an individual piece, with a prize of $10,000.
When Should you Apply?
Applications for the 2024 McElheny Award will be accepted between December 1, 2023, and January 31, 2024. You are encouraged to prepare your application well in advance and ensure you meet the deadline.
Who Can Apply?
- If you are a Freelance or staff journalist working for independent news organizations, you can submit your application.
- Also eligible to submit entries are Media outlets but it has to be done on journalists’ behalf.
- If you are a Media outlet with a large staff and an emphasis on a national audience, you are not eligible for the award.
- If your piece isn’t in English language, you can also submit it but it has to be accompanied by an English translation.
- They are also happy to receive entries from local or regional journalism from the previous year that involve in-depth reporting on topics like science, public health, technology, or the environment. Submissions can be single pieces or a series of up to three works on a related topic. Entries can be in the form of broadcast, print, or digital journalism. Audio and video entries should not exceed a total of 60 minutes.
How to Submit Your Work On Victor K. McElheny Award
To submit your work, you need to fill out a submission form and upload your work using the required file formats. Alternatively, you can provide a permanent URL. The submission form will be available from December 1, 2023, and will close on January 31, 2024.
Note that entry is free and you can submit at most three entries.
