Victor Cohn Prize is Presented every year, this award seeks to recognize a writer for a collection of work that has been published or broadcast in the past five years.
Victor Cohn Prize: For Excellence In Medical Science Reporting
The work should stand out for its exceptional clarity, accuracy, comprehensive coverage, innovation, originality, insight, and narrative strength. It should have significantly and enduringly contributed to raising public awareness and understanding of important developments in medical science and their implications for human health and well-being.
Beginning in 2023, the Cohn Prize is generously funded by Michelson Philanthropies, a charitable foundation located in Los Angeles that is dedicated to advancing medical research, promoting educational equity, and enhancing animal welfare.
Prize
- The honoree will be given a $5,000 award and a certificate. The prize will be presented during a combined awards ceremony held alongside ScienceWriters, an event that brings together CASW’s New Horizons in Science briefings and the National Association of Science Writers’ workshops. The travel expenses for the awardee to attend the ceremony will be covered.
Eligibility Criteria
- Editors, colleagues, scientists, and other individuals familiar with the candidate’s work may propose nominations. While self-nominations are allowed, it is recommended that individuals also include at least one letter of support from a knowledgeable colleague.
- Nominators for the 2024 prize can provide up to five examples of the candidate’s journalistic efforts, all of which must have been published or aired since January 2019.
- Eligible writing encompasses work published through digital media, while books are not considered eligible. The submitted work should be published in English-language media that have a readership or viewership in the United States.
- Letters of nomination should contain an evaluation of the nominee’s body of work, along with a brief biography.
How To Apply or Nominate For Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting 2024
- Both nominators and candidates are required to submit their materials through Submittable at the start of each January 1st.
- Letters of support can be uploaded as part of the nomination package or through a separate submission form designated for recommenders.
