This prize, established in honor of TWAS President Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, aims to recognize the accomplishments of female scientists in the Biological Sciences field from the Least Developed African countries. The award includes a $5,000 cash prize generously contributed by Professor Abdool Karim.
TWAS is seeking nominations for the 2024 Award from its members, as well as science academies, national research councils, universities, and scientific institutions in both developing and developed nations.

Eligibility Criteria
- The award acknowledges the accomplishments of women scientists in the field of Biological Sciences.
- Eligible candidates for the 2024 award are female scientists who are citizens of a Least Developed African country and have been residing and working there for at least two years prior to their nomination (i.e. from 01/02/2022).
- Fellows of TWAS are not permitted to apply.
- Individuals cannot nominate themselves, and nominations from jury members will be disregarded.
Nomination Process
A complete nomination should include the following information and materials:
- Contact details of the nominator
- Contact details of the nominee, along with general information on their residency and work in the past two years (self-nominations and nominations from jury members are not accepted)
- Authorization from the nominee to process their personal data for the nomination, in accordance with Italian Legislative Decree 196/2003, submitted through the online platform
- Suggested citation highlighting the nominee’s scientific achievements in Biological Sciences (15-20 words)
- A supporting statement detailing the nominee’s contributions in Biological Sciences, including a clear explanation of their work and its significance, with specific references to the scientific impact
- Comprehensive description of any foreign travel undertaken by the nominee within the last two years
- Information regarding the nominee’s PhD, including subject area, year, and awarding institution
- Brief details of the nominee’s membership in academies and societies
- Brief information about awards and honors received
- List of 10 most significant publications in an internationally acceptable format
- The nominee’s brief CV and complete list of publications, uploaded separately onto the online platform
- The nominee’s h-index in Google Scholar and associated number of citations.
