Spotify’s Newest AI Feature Builds Playlists on Text Descriptions

Spotify, the popular music streaming service, is introducing a new beta tool called AI Playlist, which allows users to create customized playlists based on text descriptions. This feature builds on last year’s experimentation with AI playlist generation in Spotify’s DJ feature.

Initially rolling out to Spotify Premium subscribers on mobile devices in the United Kingdom and Australia, the AI Playlist beta can be accessed by navigating to “Your Library” and tapping the “+” button at the top-right corner of the page. From there, users can select the AI Playlist option and input a text prompt, such as “music to read to on a cold, rainy day.”

The tool then generates a playlist of 30 songs that match the provided vibe, which users can further refine with additional prompts like “more sad music” until they are satisfied. Once the playlist is finalized, users can save it by tapping “create” at the top-right corner of the screen.

How the Feature Worked When Tested

In testing, AI Playlists demonstrated an impressive ability to match songs to niche prompts, such as generating a techno-heavy playlist for a prompt inspired by the movie “Blade (1998).”

Spotify recommends using prompts that include “a combination of genres, moods, artists, or decades” for optimal results, noting that references to places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, and emojis are supported.

However, there are some limitations to be aware of — AI Playlists cannot generate results for non-music-related prompts like current events or specific brands. Additionally, measures are in place to filter out offensive prompts.

The New Feature Offers a Convenient and Efficient Way to Create Playlists

Overall, the new feature offers a convenient and efficient way to create playlists compared to manual curation, serving as both a music discovery tool and a fun way to explore different musical aesthetics. It provides more flexibility and customization options than Spotify’s AI DJ feature, which relies solely on the user’s listening history.

What to Expect With This New Spotify Features

While the new feature enhances the Spotify experience for users, it may also contribute to potential price increases expected later this year. Currently, Premium subscriptions start at $5.99 per month for students and $10.99 for individuals. Spotify has not yet announced when the AI Playlist beta will be available in other regions.
