Main Objective of the Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship 2024

The objectives of this scheme are:

  • To support outstanding early-career researchers in establishing their independence and international reputation.
  • To provide long-term support to ambitious engineering research programs and drive impact.
  • To cultivate ambassadors for the Academy and advocates for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines.

This opportunity is open to you if you are an early-career researcher from anywhere in the world who has gotten your Ph.D. within the last four years.

It is funded by the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT), and the scheme provides financial backing for a duration of five years.

The Royal Academy of Engineering is dedicated to encouraging diversity and inclusion and therefore welcomes applications from all underrepresented groups within the engineering field.

Program benefits

  • Each application is eligible for a maximum contribution of £625,000 over five years, covering 80% of full economic costs.
  • Research Fellowships must be undertaken at a UK higher education institution/university or a UK research organization eligible to receive UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding.
  • Additional advantages you will receive include mentoring support from an Academy Fellow, reduced teaching and administrative duties to focus on research, training opportunities, networking with peers and Academy Fellows, and the chance to build a strong research track record within the RAEng Awardee Excellence Community.

Eligibility requirements for the program 

To be eligible for the program, you must be an:

  • Early-career researchers worldwide with a PhD awarded (or unconditionally approved) within the last four years are eligible.
  • There are no nationality or age restrictions for applicants, but Research Fellowships must be held at a UK institution capable of fully supporting an engineering-focused research project and researcher.
  • The host institution is responsible for securing work permits and related costs for Research Fellows, assuming all necessary work permits in the UK.

How Applicants Will Be Assessed

All submitted applications will be evaluated based on the candidate’s qualifications, research quality and vision, research environment, resource management, beneficiaries, and impact.
