ICFJ News Corp Media Fellowship – Details

In partnership with News Corp and The Wall Street Journal, the  ICFJ News Corp Media Fellowship offers a golden opportunity for journalists worldwide to explore digital journalism and data-driven storytelling.

The 2023 News Corp Media Fellowship programme offers grant financing, exclusive virtual newsroom placement with WSJ, and training in digital innovation. It expands on earlier versions of the Fellowship, which since 2014 has given journalists access to some of the most cutting-edge newsrooms in the world in terms of technology.

Selected fellows will access the following benefits:

  • Digital Innovation Training: Participate in two half-day webinars led by industry experts, covering topics such as digital tools, data journalism, artificial intelligence, mobile journalism, and audience engagement. These sessions are designed to equip you with practical skills and insights essential for navigating today’s media landscape.
  • Grant Funding for Projects: Receive one of five news innovation grants to support a data or digitally-driven project. Whether you’re passionate about pioneering new storytelling formats, leveraging data for impactful journalism, or engaging citizens through innovative platforms, these grants provide the financial support and resources needed to bring your ideas to life.
  • Virtual Newsroom Placement with WSJ: Explore the world of digital journalism with an exclusive, virtual newsroom placement at The Wall Street Journal. Who Should Apply?

The ICFJ Media Fellowship for Digital Innovation is ideal for journalists who:

  • Have experience working in newsrooms as a reporter.
  • Are currently employed in a newsroom setting.
  • Possess a strong new sense, curiosity, and collaborative spirit.
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in audience engagement and community building.
  • Are digitally savvy but eager to expand their skills in areas such as digital strategy and project management.

  • Applications must be done before the deadline on March 24th at 11:59 pm EST.
  • The fellowship program is made up of two half-day webinars in April on topics relating to digital journalism and audience engagement.
  • Fellows are allowed to apply for seed funding for a project and a two-month fellowship with the Wall Street Journal.
  • Remember, participation in both webinars is a prerequisite for eligibility to apply for the innovation grants.

Selection Process

The journalist will work with WSJ for two months, from September 15 to November 15, as part of the fellowship. The fellowship will take place in person for 25 days in the WSJ’s New York City headquarters.
