Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly adding live sports on its Max streaming service kicking off Oct. 5 for its US customers. The company made the announcement of the add-on price tier in a press release on Tuesday. Launching initially as Bleacher Report (B/R) Sports, the package in question will allow viewers to get access to simulcast streams of NBA, NHL, NCAA, US Soccer games and so many more.

Subscribers at rollout can watch live sports programming on Max at no hidden or extra cost until the promo period reportedly ends on Feb. 29. The sports package in question will then cost $10 per month and will then be available as an add-on for any Max subscription plan in the US.

BR Sports Making Its Debut under the WBD Sports Umbrella

BR Sports making its debut under the WBD Sports umbrella, will kick off with MLB’s National League Division Series on Oct. 7, alongside season openers for the NBA as well as the NHL. The platform as you should know will include additional content from the Bleacher Report brand such as live coverage, TV shows on the other hand such as Inside the NBA, on-demand videos as well as international events such as 24 Hours of Le Mans.

While fans can still get to watch TNT, TBS, and TruTV in a bid to catch their favorite teams or documentaries, the BR Sports tier on the other hand is broadcasting over 300 games and this is including March Madness as they all get to air live.

Live Sports Was Initially Teased At a Virtual Press Event

CEO David Zaslav initially teased the possibility of live sports programming at a virtual press event for Max back in April. “We’re a global leader in sports. And we’re a global leader in news,” he stated. “And in a few months, we’ll come back to you with details of our attack plan to use this important and differentiating live content to grow our streaming business even further.”

The Benefits of an Existing Sports Portfolio

An existing portfolio of sports brands has reportedly given WBD an edge in launching live streams in the streaming market. TNT Sports, Eurosport, Global Cycling Network (GCN) as well as Discovery are all among the brands that may help to benefit from this strategy. Citing the success of the company on linear as well as streaming in the UK with BT Sport, Zaslav stated that there is room to grow in other locales. “We believe there’s significant opportunity in the streaming space for sports, and we look forward to leaning into this incremental growth avenue,” he reportedly stated.
