“I want law enforcement agencies to immediately establish an investigation into the attack of the e-passport issuance system at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services,” stated President Lazarus Chakwera after the attack. The long arm of the law should be applied to those found guilty of the offense.

The system was hacked by unidentified “mercenaries” who demanded a ransom, the president claimed, posing a “major violation in Malawi’s national security.” The nation’s passport production system was taken over by the hackers.

Charles Kalumo, the director general of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services, declared the restoration this week in a statement.

A Team of Local Experts Worked Around the Clock

Due to the progress, passport printing will start this week in Lilongwe and eventually spread to the other districts. The department has resumed its e-passport Issuance service.

According to the report, a team of local experts from various entities worked around the clock to fix the e-passport issuance system and finish it within the president’s deadline.

The statement from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services thanked all affected Malawians for their patience during this time.
