This comes after “many outages” that affected internet service providers and business users last year and early this year due to vandalism and other damage to its equipment.

A R400 million fiber extension project to install 800 “dry underground distribution cabinets” (DUDCs) in densely networked locations was announced by DFA in August of last year.

According to a statement from the corporation, the most recent announcement focuses on increasing the DUDC project’s efficiency.

Gauteng will be the starting point for the roll-out, as it is the “densest portion of our network.”

DFA’s Ability to Roll Out New Managed Services

“In 2023, we implemented several rehabilitation programs to restore stability to the network following multiple outages caused by vandalism and third-party damage.” According to a statement by Maziv’s chief operating officer, Dewald Booysen, “These initiatives were largely successful but were a temporary measure in preparation for these major upgrades planned for 2024.”

The “grey cable” project, the second of the two, effectively divides DFA’s infrastructure from client infrastructure and increases DFA’s ability to roll out new managed services and increase bandwidth speeds quickly.

Additionally, it will boost route variety and redundancy, giving consumers an inexpensive safeguard against losing network and internet connectivity or network isolation.

According to Booysen, the DFA intends to implement full DUDC coverage in 13 precincts within the Gauteng South region by the end of September. Several DUDCs are now operational in the area.
