In collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, the Graça Machel Trust is thrilled to announce the expansion of the Women Creating Wealth – Intergenerational (WCW-I) Edition 2024, an initiative aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs to catalyze economic growth and foster community development.

The Challenge

Women play an important role in African entrepreneurship constituting 58% of the continent’s self-employed population. Despite this commendable presence, female entrepreneurs in sub-Saharan Africa encounter formidable hurdles in achieving profitability and scaling their ventures. The recent World Bank report, ‘Profiting from Parity,’ underscores the pressing need to address these challenges and unlock the full potential of women-led businesses.

The Solution

The Women Creating Wealth (WCW) program seeks to equip women entrepreneurs with the tools, knowledge, and networks necessary to scale their enterprises and transition from income generation to wealth creation. With a track record of empowering over 2000 women across Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, South Africa, Kenya, Senegal, and Uganda, WCW is poised to make an even greater impact.

Eligibility Criteria

The program is open to Young women with business operations in one of the countries listed below:

  • Kenya
  • Malawi
  • Senegal
  • South Africa
  • Tanzania
  • Zambia

Requirement

  • Age: 18 years and above.
  • Have already completed secondary school education.
  • Their business turnover should be between $10,000 to $500,000 or the equivalent of the local currency.
  • Business experience: Minimum of 2 years
  • Candidates should not currently be engaged in another entrepreneurship support program lasting longer than a week.
  • Employs at least 5 young people and shows potential to expand further, and create more job opportunities for the youth.
  • The businesses can be sole proprietorships, partnerships, companies, cooperatives, or groups.
