The Africa Institute is now accepting applications for the third group of Tejumola Olaniyan Creative Writers-in-Residence Fellowship for the academic year 2024, as part of its African Languages and Translation Program.

This residency program pays tribute to the late Nigerian Professor Tejumola Olaniyan and his significant contributions to African literature and critical theory.

Benefits

  • The grant amount awarded is 45,000 AED in total.
  • The residency in Sharjah, UAE will be funded and will last for three months.
  • The Africa Institute’s publication program will provide the opportunity for recipients to publish their texts. Theatre and film scripts related projects can be published as texts or assisted with production support.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The residency program is open for applications from creative writers, including novelists, short story writers, playwrights, poets, and scriptwriters who are connected to Africa and the African diaspora.
  • The proposed project can be written in Arabic or English, although other languages will also be considered.
  • Recipients will have the opportunity to publish their texts through The Africa Institute’s publication program. Theatre and film script projects can also be published as texts or receive support in facilitating productions.
  • The project can be either a new work or a work-in-progress, but it should be realistically achievable within the timeframe of the residency.
  • All applications will undergo review by The Africa Institute, which includes a committee of respected writers in the field.
  • Three individuals will be chosen based on the excellence of their proposal and the proven capability of finishing the project within the duration of the residency.

How to Apply

  • To apply for the residency program, you will need to submit the following documents:
  • Your CV/résumé.
  • A two-page narrative outlining the project you plan to work on during the residency, explaining its significance, and providing a proposed completion date.
  • A sample of your published or unpublished writings.
  • Please compile all application materials, including the CV/résumé, the two-page narrative, and the writing sample (if applicable), into a single PDF file.
  • Name the file using the abbreviation of the residency title and your name in the format: TOCWRP_LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME. Use the same name in the email subject line and attach the PDF file to the email and send it to the provided email address on the official website .
