The goal is to enable African institutions to carry out research that is competitive on a worldwide scale, with an emphasis on tackling the region’s health and development issues.

CARTA provides a joint PhD training programme in public and population health as one of its innovations. The major obstacles that Africa’s higher education institutions face in terms of preparing and retaining the region’s future generation of scholars led to the creation of this programme.

CARTA PhD Fellowship overview

Applications for the 2025 CARTA PhD Fellowship are open from any discipline as long as the research topic aims to address population health and public health challenges in Africa, including economics, anthropology, demography, and public health. CARTA is dedicated to gender parity in access to its training programmes and governance structure. For this reason, women are encouraged to apply.

Staff members of participating institutions who are interested in pursuing their PhD research on subjects related to the broad domains of public and population health are eligible to apply for the multidisciplinary CARTA PhD grant.
