Eligibility Requirements for E4D Doctoral Scholarship Programme
Applicant Criteria:
- Prospective candidates must meet the general entrance requirements for doctoral studies at ETH Zurich and the respective department.
- Prior experience in the selected research area is essential, ensuring that applicants possess the expertise necessary to undertake rigorous academic inquiry.
- Applicants must be citizens of low- and lower-middle-income countries, as defined by the OECD DAC-2024-2025 list.
Supervisor Qualifications
- Each doctoral candidate must be supervised by an ETH professor with a guaranteed position for the duration of the project.
- Candidates may collaborate with advisors from Federal Research Institutes, such as Eawag, Empa, PSI, and WSL. However, primary supervision must be provided by an ETH Zurich professor.
- The supervisor’s commitment to the project is paramount, as evidenced by a formal letter of support outlining their contributions in cash or kind.
Research Project Guidelines
- Proposed research projects must align with the thematic scope of ETH Zurich and offer innovative solutions to challenges faced by communities in low-income countries.
- Projects should focus on the development of methods, technologies, tools, or products that directly benefit underprivileged populations.
- Also, must consider the ecological, socio-economic, and cultural context in which they will be implemented, ensuring sustainable and culturally sensitive outcomes.
Partnership Requirements
- Collaborative partnerships are integral to the success of E4D projects.
- Research initiatives involving partners from low-income countries must adhere to the KFPE principles, which emphasize inclusive project formulation and development.
- All partners are expected to make substantial commitments, whether in-kind or financial and integrate the project into the ongoing activities of their respective institutions.
- Projects must include partners from countries listed on the OECD DAC-2024-25 list.
Application Procedure
The application process consists of two stages:
First Step: Concept Note Submission
Candidates are required to submit a Concept Note Application Form to the E4D programme office by email ([email protected]) before the deadline of April 30, 2024. Concept notes that meet all specified criteria will be evaluated by the ETH4D Committee for Exchanges. Only those deemed suitable for advancement will proceed to the second step of the application process.
Second Step: Full Proposal Development
Candidates whose concept notes are approved will collaborate with their designated professors to develop a comprehensive full proposal. This collaborative effort involves outlining the project’s objectives, methodology, and anticipated outcomes. Close consultation between the candidate and supervisor is essential to ensure alignment with the program’s objectives. Upon completion, the full proposal will undergo further evaluation to determine eligibility for funding.
