Requirements for Applicants

To be eligible for the Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship Program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Early-Career Researchers: Applicants must have been awarded their Ph.D. within the last four years or have unconditionally approved PhD status at the time of application.
  • No Nationality or Age Restrictions: There are no nationality or age restrictions for applicants, making the program accessible to talented researchers from around the globe.
  • Host Institution: Research Fellowships must be held at a UK higher education institution/university or a UK research organization eligible to receive UKRI funding. The host institution must demonstrate its capability to fully support an engineering-focused research project and researcher, including providing necessary work permits and support equivalent to that of a permanent employee.

Selection Process

The selection process for the Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship Program consists of three stages:

  • General Review: Eligible applications undergo a general review by three non-expert reviewers, followed by selection by a sift panel of Academy Fellows.
  • Expert Review: Selected applications are assessed by three expert reviewers with relevant expertise in the proposed research area. A shortlist panel then selects the most competitive applications to proceed to the final stage.
  • Interviews: Shortlisted candidates are invited to participate in interviews conducted by a panel of four Academy Fellows. Each interview includes a five-minute presentation by the candidate and a discussion of their research proposal and vision. Based on the interviews, the panel ranks the applications and selects the top award candidates.
