This scholarship is a for passionate and talented individuals to pursue their Master of Science (MSc) studies in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Pharmaceutical Sciences in Switzerland.

Established in 2014 by the Alfred Werner SCS Foundation, this scholarship honors the legacy of Alfred Werner, a distinguished Nobel Prize laureate renowned for his contributions to the field of chemistry. He was a former student of ETH Zurich and a professor at the University of Zurich.

His research laid the foundation for modern coordination chemistry and earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1913. The Alfred Werner Scholarship Program seeks to uphold his legacy by supporting the next generation of bright minds in the field of chemistry.

Alfred Werner Scholarship Program – Overview

The Alfred Werner Scholarship Program aims to attract highly talented international students who have completed their Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree at a university outside Switzerland.

The program offers scholarships to pursue Master of Science (MSc) studies at renowned Swiss universities or Federal Institutes of Technology, including École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Swiss Fédéral Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), University of Basel, University of Berne, University of Fribourg, University of Geneva, University of Zurich.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Alfred Werner Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Have applied for a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry at one of the participating Swiss universities.
  • Be a student from a foreign country admitted to a participating Swiss university.
  • Demonstrate outstanding academic performance, ranking in the top 10% of their Bachelor of Science (BSc) programs.
  • Display a keen interest and passion for Chemistry and Biochemistry, as evidenced by their academic achievements and extracurricular activities.

Benefits

Selected scholars will receive a scholarship grant worth CHF 30,000, generously provided by the SCS Foundation and supported by the Swiss chemical and pharmaceutical industry, as well as private donors.

In addition to financial support, scholars will benefit from mentorship opportunities, networking events, and access to the resources of the Swiss Chemical Society.

How to Apply

To apply for the Alfred Werner Scholarship, qualified candidates should follow these steps:

  • Apply for admission to a Master of Science (MSc) program at a participating Swiss University or Federal Institute of Technology.
  • Request nomination for the scholarship from the respective institution.
  • Submit the nomination to the Alfred Werner SCS Foundation by the end of March 2024.
  • Please note that direct applications to the SCS Foundation will not be considered.
