The European Charlemagne Youth Prize recognizes and honors youth-led initiatives that advance democracy in Europe, and foster collaboration and understanding within Europe and globally.

It celebrates the ongoing efforts of young individuals in bolstering a unified European identity and acknowledges their engaged contributions to the advancement of Europe. The prize is a collaborative effort between the European Parliament and the Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen and was founded in 2008.

Award

  • The three top European projects will be awarded the following prizes: €7,500 for first place, €5,000 for second place, and €2,500 for third place.
  • Participants from the winning projects in each country are welcomed to the Charlemagne Youth Prize award ceremony in Aachen.
  • As part of the prize, the European winners are invited to visit the European Parliament in Brussels or Strasbourg.
  • One representative from each of the 3 European winners will have the opportunity to take a Schuman traineeship in the European Parliament. The nominee for the traineeship must be part of the core team of the winning project and fulfil all the eligibility criteria for the traineeship scheme. The traineeship can begin either on 1 October or 1 March within the 12 months following the award of the Prize. Further details about this opportunity will be directly communicated to the national winning projects before the Award Ceremony.

Eligibility Criteria For the European Charlemagne Youth Prize 

To be eligible for the Charlemagne Youth Prize, you must:

  • Have a European project for which you intend to apply;
  • Reside in one of the EU Member States: You can present a project as an individual applicant or represent an organization. Or a collective of young individuals.
  • Must have been submitted by a young resident of one of the 27 EU Member States who is between the ages of 16 and 30 at the time of application.

Applicants must have demonstrated success in the following areas:

  • Fostering cooperation and understanding both across Europe and internationally, based on democratic values (such as respect for human dignity, freedom, equality, the rule of law, and human rights)
  • Promoting a collective European identity and integration
  • Encouraging other young individuals in Europe to participate in democracy
  • Providing tangible instances of Europeans living together as a community.

 Evaluation Criteria

Proposals will be assessed based on the following factors:

  • The degree to which the prize’s goals have been met;
  • The ingenuity and uniqueness of the project, encompassing inventive endeavors;
  • Projects with an international scope (involving young individuals from multiple Member States) will be given precedence.

How To Apply For the European Charlemagne Youth Prize 2024

  • Each project that is submitted will undergo an initial assessment. By the national jury of the project’s Member State which will choose one nomination. The European Jury will then select the top three European laureates. From these 27 national winners and awarded up to €7500 in prize money for their projects.
