Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships 2024-25 (Up to $70,000 Stipends Per Year)

The Government of Canada Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships for the 2024-25 academic calendar, is now open for applications from eligible postdoctoral scholars globally. The best postdoctoral candidates from around the nation and abroad who will impact the nation’s social, economic, and research-based development are funded through the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships programme.

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

Each year, up to 70 fellowships are awarded, about 140 grants in each given moment. The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are split equally among The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships –  Benefits & Duration

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships offers fellows a stipend of $70,000 per year, which is taxable. There are no additional funds made available to cover fellows’ travel and research costs.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships covers a duration of two years.

Eligibility Requirements for Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

To be eligible for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships 2024-25, applicants must meet the eligibility requirements below:

  • Citizenship and location of host institution: Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and foreign citizens are eligible to apply, provided they meet specific conditions outlined by the program.
  • Eligibility window for degree completion: Applicants must have completed all degree requirements for a PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree within a specified timeframe.
  • Allowable extensions: In certain circumstances, such as career interruptions due to extenuating circumstances, applicants may be eligible for extensions to the eligibility window.
  • Eligible host institutions include Canadian and foreign universities, affiliated research hospitals, colleges, and not-for-profit organizations with a robust research mandate and capacity.
  • A candidate may only submit one application to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships programme per year of competition.

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships, without exception are;

  • Only tenable at the organization that initially sponsored the program’s application;
  • For two years;
  • Cannot be held in conjunction with another tri-agency training award;
  • Must be taken up between April 1 and October 1 of the application year.

Application Process for Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

The application process for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships entails several key tasks, including:

  1. Confirming eligibility
  2. Contacting desired host institution/supervisor
  3. Registering for a Canadian Common CV (CCV) account and ResearchNet account
  4. Completing the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Self-Identification Questionnaire
  5. Creating a CCV (Vanier-Banting academic template) and linking it to the ResearchNet application
  6. Identifying the area of research
  7. Identifying participants and referees
  8. Entering degree information
  9. Providing proposal information and supporting documents
  10. Previewing application materials
  11. Consenting and submitting the application
  12. Ensuring documents attached meets the required standards

Timelines

  • April to September 2024: Applicants should seek endorsement from their host institution, prepare, and submit their applications.
  • September 17, 2024: Applications submission closing.
  • October to December 2024: Evaluation of applications.
  • Mid-February 2025: Anticipated notification of results.
  • April to October 2025: Payments begin.
