The WTO Young Professionals Programme (YPP) offers a distinctive chance for eligible young professionals under the age of 32 as of January 1, 2025, from WTO Members with limited or no professional presence in the WTO Secretariat.

This programme is designed to improve their understanding of WTO and expertise in global trade matters. The primary objective of the Programme is to expand the network of professionals from these WTO Member countries, with the overarching aim of increasing their representation within the WTO and/or other regional and international bodies.

The chosen Young Professional will be assigned to a particular department within the WTO Secretariat based on the organization’s needs and priorities, as well as the individual’s areas of interest. Each Young Professional can indicate their interest in up to three areas of WTO work, in order of preference.

This programme provides young professionals with the chance to acquire work experience at the WTO. It is a one-year program with no option for extension.

  • Trade and Environment
  • Trade Facilitation
  • Trade Finance
  • Trade and Gender
  • Trade in Services and Investment
  • Trade Policy Analysis
  • Trade-Related Technical Assistance.
  • Trade Remedies (anti-dumping and countervailing duties)

Monthly Salary

  • The chosen candidate will receive a monthly salary of CHF4,000.

Eligibility Requirement

Education

  • Obtained an advanced university degree in economics, econometrics, international relations, law, environmental studies, or other trade-relevant fields pertinent to WTO’s work (e.g., international investment law, trade, and gender, etc.).
  • Applicants should have already obtained their advanced university degree when submitting their application.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • A general knowledge of the WTO’s work.
  • Technical proficiency in one or multiple specified areas of work(as listed above).
  • Capable of drafting proficiently in English. The ability to draft in French and/or Spanish would be advantageous.
  • Skillful at working independently and as part of a team, in a multicultural environment.
  • Demonstrated keen interest in international trade and the multilateral trading system.
  • A strong dedication and enthusiasm for trade or WTO-related activities.

Work Experience

  • At least two (2) years of relevant professional experience are required for the WTO role.

Languages

  • Must be fluent in English. A good knowledge of either French or Spanish would be an advantage.

Preference will be given to candidates from WTO Member countries without representation and from developing and least developed countries with minimal representation at the professional level in the Secretariat.
