UNESCO has announced the opening of the nominations for the 2024 UNESCO Prize for Girls and Women’s Education on the occasion of International Women’s Day. This esteemed award bestows an annual sum of US$ 50,000 to recognize the outstanding work of two winners who have made significant impacts in the promotion of girls and women’s education.

The UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education aims to recognize and celebrate noteworthy and innovative initiatives undertaken by individuals, institutions, and organizations to enhance girls’ and women’s education. It is the first of its kind awarded by UNESCO, highlighting successful projects that not only improve educational opportunities for girls and women but also enhance the overall quality of their lives.

For Girls and Women’s Education is sponsored by the Government of the People’s Republic of China and is awarded every year to two accomplished laureates to support and promote their work in the field of girls and women’s education. The Director-General of UNESCO conferred this honor for the first time in 2016.

Prize

  • The UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education grants a yearly prize of US$ 50,000 to recognize and honor two exceptional individuals or organizations who have made remarkable contributions to the promotion of the education of girls and women.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Governments of UNESCO Member States or Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in official partnership with UNESCO are the ones nominating candidates for the UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education. Each nominator can put forward up to three individuals, institutions, or organizations that have made notable and pioneering contributions to girls’ and women’s education.
  • The acceptance of self-nominations is not permitted for this prize.
  • Individuals interested in applying are encouraged to reach out to their country’s National Commission for UNESCO, the Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, an NGO partnering with UNESCO, or the Prize Secretariat to obtain further details and information.

Nominees

  • Nominees for this recognition must be individuals, institutions, or organizations that are actively promoting the education of girls and women. The nominations should highlight a specific project or program that the candidate has been involved in for a minimum of two years and meets the designated selection criteria.”

Nomination Process

  • Nominations must be submitted only in English or French through an online platform. This platform is accessible only to National Commissions for UNESCO / Permanent Delegations to UNESCO  and NGOs that have an official partnership with UNESCO.
  • The nominations must fulfill the eligibility and selection criteria established by the Prize. The projects being nominated should have been established and operational for a minimum of two years, and they should demonstrate the potential to be replicated and scaled up.
