Returnal’s Latest Update Rebalances the Endless Tower of Sisyphus. Sony has finally surprised fans with the Returnal: Ascension update back in March. Adding campaign co-op and an endless survival mode with the name the Tower of Sisyphus to the popular roguelike, it was received very well, and now it is being adjusted through its new update.
Returnal’s Latest Update Rebalances the Endless Tower of Sisyphus
As announced via Twitter, the developer Housemarque confirmed details concerning the Returnal update 3.03 earlier this morning, which has since gone live. Said to rebalance gameplay and fix several bugs that affect the co-op play, Housemarque confirmed that it’s also reset the leaderboards for its endless mode, placing everybody on a playing field that is even.
However, if you are looking forward to a more detailed look at what has been altered, you would not find it, at least not at the moment. The exact balance changes that were made in this update were not confirmed by Housemarque in the full patch notes.
- Tower of Sisyphus: Added Audio Log 94 to an additional location in the tower
- Tower of Sisyphus: Fixed a rare issue where Algos might refuse to die or die too early in the tower
- Tower of Sisyphus: Increased leaderboard scrolling speed
- Co-Op: Fixed several issues where a client or host might encounter a black screen or hang when moving between biomes during co-op play
- Co-Op: Fixed multiple minor gameplay bugs
- Co-Op: Fixed two rare crashes in co-op mode
At the moment, we do not know if there would be any upcoming update soon, though we’ve gotten some clues on Housemarque’s next steps. Speaking at the DICE Awards in March, Managing Director Ilari Kuittinen confirmed the team’s next game would come with an amazing brand-new IP instead of a Returnal sequel, stating “it’s early days US starting a new game, a new IP, concepting it out. Well, we would see what comes with that.
Returnal: Ascension Surprises the Fans
Ascension arrived about a year after Returnal’s original launch and though we have seen some significant post-launch updates – update 2.0 added both a save system and photo mode – The update 2.0 brought along with-it a save system and photo mode – 3.0 became a literal game-changer because of two reasons.
First, we had the Tower of Sisyphus, a survival mode with escalating difficulty. Once you have unlocked the Icarian Grapnel, you would be able to access this new endless mode that’s split into phases, and each of the phases features 20 floors and a new boss, Algos. Unsurprisingly, this would get harder through each phase, but thanks to leaderboards and score multipliers, there are tons of incentives to try again.
Secondly, this brought about two-player online co-op to the main campaign, allowing players to enjoy the game with their friends in private matches or with random players publicly. You cannot stray far away from your teammate and if another player’s downed, your partner has the chance to revive you. Between these two features, the fans have had a great excuse to play Returnal once more.
