The US Justice Department (DOJ) states that the FBI has reportedly created a decryption tool that helped it return the data of more than 500 ransomware victims as part of a multinational law enforcement push. The department also wrote that the bureau had seized “several websites” that are operated by the ALPHV / Blackcat ransomware gang.

ALPHV / Blackcat Claims To Have Regained Control of Its Site

Bleeping Computer, however, reports that by this afternoon, ALPHV / Blackcat has claimed to have regained control of its site and that the FBI in question only had decryption keys for 400 or so firms, leaving over 3,000 victims whose data remains encrypted. The gang as you should know also reportedly stated that it was no longer restricting affiliates making use of its ransomware software from attacking critical infrastructure, and this is including hospitals as well as nuclear power plants.

What the DOJ Has To Say About This Development

As per the DOJ, “Over the past 18 months, ALPHV/Blackcat has emerged as the second most prolific ransomware-as-a-service variant in the world based on the hundreds of millions of dollars in ransoms paid by victims around the world.” The gang in its model is responsible for creating as well as updating the ransomware, while affiliates on the other hand find targets and then launch the attacks, and then they get to split the profits.

Some of the Activities of the Ransomware Gang over Time

The gang over the summer also claimed credit for a Reddit hack, and then demanding $4.5 million to return the data, as well as for also stealing data from  Namco Bandai, a games publisher. And close to the end of the summer, the gang also claimed credit for shutting down a host of MGM Resorts casinos and hotels situated in Las Vegas, Nevada.
