MSI, a Taiwanese computing hardware powerhouse has just suffered a ransomware attack in the previous week, but the company is however playing down its impact.

PCMag reportedly found a report filed by the company with the Taiwanese Stock Exchange (TWSE) in which the incident was detailed including a discussion of the type of data that could have been taken in the reported attack, as well as the effects it might get to have on the business.

“After detecting some information systems being attacked by hackers, MSI’s IT department has initiated information security defense mechanism and recovery procedures. The Company also has been reported [sic] the anomaly to the relevant government authorities,” MSI stated.

Details of the reported attack other than what has been shared are scarce at the moment. We really do not know exactly when the incident took place as it could have happened a couple of months ago, the systems as well as the endpoints encrypted by the company, or even if any of the company’s sensitive data was taken in the attack.

MSI’s Statement on the Reported Attack

MSI has however stated that the cyberattack did not have any major or significant operational or financial impact, thus noting:

“No significant impact our business in terms of financial and operational currently. The Company is also enhancing the information security control measures of its network and infrastructure to ensure data security.”

The company however did warn its users to get firmware and BIOS updates from official sources, as reported by BleepingComputer.

“MSI urges users to obtain firmware/BIOS updates only from its official website, and not to use files from sources other than the official website,” the company stated.

The Money Message Ransomware Gang Claims They Are Behind the Attack

The Money Message ransomware gang in the early parts of this week claimed to have infiltrated some of the systems f MSI and then stolen some files that will be leaked online in the coming week in the event the company fails to pay a $4 million ransom.

And although the company did not reveal the person or organization behind the attack, a threat actor which is popularly known as Money Message claimed to have breached the systems of MSI and then stolen some files in the process. The group has asked for $4 million in order to not publish the files or make them public.
