The primary goal of this initiative is to nurture a dynamic and enduring AI ecosystem in Nigeria. It does so by offering monetary assistance, promoting knowledge exchange, and encouraging collaboration among individuals and organizations involved in the AI industry. Successful AI researchers or start-ups have the opportunity to receive up to N5,000,000 each. The funding is available for those working in various fields, including but not limited to

About The Program
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly revolutionizing various industries and has the potential to drive job opportunities, economic progress, and social development. With a population of over 200 million people and a youthful demographic, with a median age of 18.4 years, Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, is well-positioned to leverage AI to accelerate its economic prosperity. Additionally, Nigeria boasts a growing pool of technology talent and a thriving startup ecosystem, including six unicorns as of 2022.
To fully capitalize on the benefits of AI, Nigeria must make substantial investments in AI research and development, along with formulating robust policies. Research efforts will play a crucial role in creating adaptable AI models for key sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, and finance. Moreover, bridging the gap between academic breakthroughs and industry implementation will optimize innovation and entrepreneurial initiatives. Pilot studies and field experiments on deployed AI systems will generate valuable insights into the impacts of AI. At the same time, evidence-based policies can be formulated regarding ethical AI use, data governance, privacy, safety, automation, inclusion, and other emerging AI-related concerns.
Nigeria aims to foster research and innovations in AI that drive job creation, and economic growth, enhance government services, and have positive societal impacts across the country. By strategically focusing on AI research and development, Nigeria can unlock the potential of this transformative technology and drive sustainable progress.
Funding.
- A maximum of N5,000,000 will be awarded to 45 AI researchers and start-ups.
Eligibility Criteria
- The consortium should comprise a local startup or technology company, a local academic researcher, and if feasible, a foreign researcher.
- A research proposal that aligns with the priority areas of the Federal Ministry of Communications and Innovation is required.
- The applicant must provide a detailed proposal that outlines the project and its potential impact on the Nigerian economy.
- A proven track record of excellence in research or entrepreneurship is necessary.
- The ability to publish a minimum of one peer-reviewed article within a year of receiving the grant is expected.
Selection Criteria
The panel of AI experts will carefully review the grant applications, considering the following criteria:
- The research proposal’s quality and originality.
- The applicant’s proven track record of excellence in research or entrepreneurship.
- The extent to which the research aligns with the AI priority areas of the Federal Nigerian Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy.
- The project budget’s feasibility.
Application Process
- The application period starts on October 13, 2023, and closes on November 15, 2023.
- All applications must be submitted through the specified online platform.
- A panel of AI experts will review and evaluate the proposals.
- Shortlisted applicants will receive notification via email and will be invited for an interview.
- Applicants who are selected will receive an email notification regarding their acceptance.
