Harvard University’s Nieman Visiting Fellowships offer exciting short-term research opportunities to individuals eager to contribute to the field of journalism. This initiative, which began in 2012, has awarded 69 visiting fellowships to date.
In 2021, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the movement for racial justice, the Nieman Foundation focused on projects that promote racial justice and public health journalism in the United States.
The unique feature of these fellowships is that candidates need not be practicing journalists, but they must illustrate how their work at Harvard and the Nieman Foundation can enhance the future of journalism.
Nieman Visiting Fellowships – What to Expect
All Nieman Visiting Fellows will be granted access to Harvard and MIT’s extensive resources, including local scholars, research centers, and libraries.
They are encouraged to achieve concrete results during their fellowship period, either by developing a project that can be completed within their time at Harvard or as part of a bigger project that goes beyond the fellowship duration.
Fellows are also expected to share their progress and findings, either through Nieman’s in-house websites—Nieman Reports, Nieman Journalism Lab, and Nieman Storyboard—or through other suitable mediums.
Eligibility Criteria for the Nieman Visiting Fellowships
To be eligible to participate in the Nieman Visiting Fellowships at Harvard:
- Candidates must ensure that their proposed project has the potential to advance journalism in various ways, including research, programming, design, financial strategies, or other relevant topics.
- Individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply, including journalists, publishers, technologists, entrepreneurs, programmers, designers, media analysts, academics, and more.
- The fellowship does not have; age requirements, academic prerequisites, or a college degree.
- The Nieman Visiting Fellowships are open to both U.S. and international applicants.
- Candidates must be available to reside in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the duration of the fellowship.
- Proficiency in English is essential, as fellows must speak and read English fluently and have a command of written English.
Nieman Visiting Fellowships Duration
Nieman Visiting Fellowships follow the calendar year rather than the academic year. Applicants are allowed to specify their preferred start date, the number of weeks they request (up to 12 weeks), and any flexibility regarding dates in the online application.
The Nieman Foundation will collaborate with selected fellows to determine a start date. Most fellowships last between four and eight weeks.
Financial Benefits
Up to $1,325 is given weekly to fellows who do not receive financial support from their employer in the course of the fellowship. However, in a situation where an employer retains the fellow on salary during the fellowship, a fellowship stipend will not be provided.
In addition, a well-furnished one-bedroom accommodation is provided to fellows who do not reside in the Boston area or those who lack accommodations.

The application requires candidates to provide the following information:
- Biographical information
- A Résumé or Curriculum Vitae
- Three professional references with contact information,
- A 600-word project proposal, outlining the project the applicant intends to pursue as a visiting fellow at Harvard.

- How do you plan to use your fellowship time to advance the project?
