Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Gilman Scholarship, applicants must meet the requirements below:

  • Applicants with citizenship or nationality of the United States are eligible
  • Enrollment as an undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Receipt of a Federal Pell Grant or proof of eligibility to receive one during the term of study abroad.
  • Acceptance into a credit-bearing study abroad or internship program.
  • Selection of a program in a country or location with a Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, as designated by the U.S. Department of State.
  • Additionally, applicants are required to submit three essays as part of the application process: the Statement of Purpose Essay, the Building Mutual Understanding Essay, and the Follow-on Service Project Proposal. These essays provide applicants with the opportunity to articulate their academic goals, demonstrate their commitment to cultural exchange, and outline their plans for future engagement.
