Applications are now open for the fourth group of the JournalismAI Fellowship, with a particular emphasis on projects that aim to utilize GenAI. The 2024 Fellowship cohort will consist of up to 30 journalists and technologists who will collaborate over seven months from April to November.

Benefits

  • The JournalismAI Fellowship is fully funded for selected participants, thanks to the backing of the Google News Initiative.
  • Approximately GBP £6,000 per project has been set aside to cover research and project development costs.
  • It’s important to note that these funds are intended for research and project development purposes and are not in the form of a stipend or compensation. This means that participants are not expected to leave their current employment to take part in the Fellowship Programme.
  • Mentors will receive GBP £500 for the eight hours they dedicate to supporting your work.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible applicants for the Fellowship include individuals working in news organizations in editorial or technical roles. Applicants can apply either as a pair, consisting of one editorial and one technical colleague, or as an individual.
  • All candidates must possess experience working on products and/or stories involving the use of AI technologies.
  • It is essential that whether you apply separately or as a pair, your team must have an equal distribution of editorial and technical members to be considered for final selection. Teams may consist of four or six fellows, with an equal split between editorial/strategic and technical fellows.
  • Proficiency in English is a requirement.
  • It’s important to note that this programme is not designed as a training opportunity. For journalists who have little to no experience working with AI technologies. If you are new to this field, it is recommended to consider applying for our Academy for Small Newsrooms or the JournalismAI Discovery instead.
