Applications are currently open for the Design Fellowship Program 2024. The Design Fellowship, previously called the Designer in Residence program, offers an exciting opportunity for a graphic designer based in the Bay Area.

This program allows designers to enhance their portfolio by establishing a long-term relationship with a respected contemporary arts organization. In addition to a stipend, the Design Fellow receives a budget for an independent project and is also invited to engage in various activities such as Open House events and artist dinners.

Similar to other Artist Programs at Headlands, the Design Fellowship supports individuals who are at the forefront of their field and have a keen interest in pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities within their medium. The aim of the program is to create a unified and dynamic aesthetic by developing a unique body of original work while employing Headlands’ existing visual identity in an innovative manner.

Benefits

  • A financial stipend of $10,500 will be provided, distributed in three installments throughout 2024.
  • An independent project can receive a budget of up to $1,000.
  • The Design Fellow will have the chance to expand their professional portfolio while being part of a vibrant creative community.
  • Participation in internal programs, including Show & Tell nights with fellow Headlands Artists, will be available.
  • With pre-approval, the Design Fellow may have the opportunity to stay on the Headlands campus during the residency period, with two one-week stays permitted.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Displays a strong enthusiasm for challenging conventions in the field.
  • Proficient in digital production skills.
  • Open to Bay area graphics designer
  • Capable of showcasing their abilities through practical demonstrations:
  • Proficient in digital production, specifically working with website and email templates.
  • Experienced in collaborating with web developers.
  • Skilled in understanding and fulfilling client requirements.
  • Proficient in managing projects within set budgets, demonstrating creativity under constraints.
  • Comfortable working with remote team members across various departments.
  • Open to dialogue, feedback, and collaborative work with a team.
  • Willingness to explore new ideas and learn from experience
  • Effective communication skills in fast-paced and adaptable work environments.
  • Consistently follows established work plans and meets deadlines
  • Enthusiasm for working with a modern arts organization.
