Applications are now open for the 2024 Arturo Falaschi PhD Fellowships by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB). The “Doctor Philosophiae” (PhD) degree in the living sciences is the goal of the postgraduate programs offered by ICGEB.
The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology commonly referred to as ICGEB was established under UNIDO in 1983. ICGEB is an autonomous Inter-governmental organisation, with biotech labs in the following countries: Italy, India, and South Africa.
Benefits of Arturo Falaschi PhD Fellowships
- The Arturo Falaschi PhD Fellowships awards fellows with a monthly stipend: Cape Town (South Africa): ZAR 14,000; New Delhi (India): US$ 1,020; Trieste (Italy): 1,500 euros.
- Travel Cost: The fellowship covers the cost of the student’s initial transportation from their home country to the ICGEB lab as well as their return transportation at the end of the fellowship.
- Throughout the fellowship, there is reimbursement for medical expenses.
- For the duration of the PhD registration term, the university tuition is paid.
- The application and renewal fees for visas and permits of stay are compensated.
- The Group Leader / PI typically offers support for attending meetings and courses.
Eligibility Requirements for Arturo Falaschi PhD Fellowships
To apply for Arturo Falaschi PhD Fellowships;
- The Prospective Candidate must hail from or be a citizen of an ICGEB member state.
- Qualifications: Candidates for ICGEB Trieste must be BSc (Hons) graduates; candidates for ICGEB Cape Town and New Delhi must be MSc graduates.
- Candidates must demonstrate a strong command of the English language with a proficiency certificate (such as the TOEFL, Cambridge Certificate, or its equivalent). Not necessary if academic coursework has been completed in English.
- Applicants must be under 32 years old at the time of application for Trieste, Italy.
- Applications for the ICGEB New Delhi and Cape Town are accepted from applicants of any age.

Selection Criteria
- All applications will be sent to the appropriate liaison officer of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) in the Candidate’s home country for review and approval.
- A vital prerequisite for the Fellowship to be granted is endorsement. Applications that are submitted by the deadline and are endorsed in full will be assessed by the ICGEB Fellowships Selection Committee.
- The primary criteria used include the project’s scientific quality, the candidate’s resume, and the project’s potential benefits for the home nation. The candidates will receive an email as soon as possible after the application deadline informing them of the results.

- Academic records (diploma certificates and transcripts). The records should outline detailed information on all courses/final examinations completed. Including the credit value or hours per course and grades received. Academic documents must be issued by the degree-granting University with their official seals and signatures.
- Written Statement from the ICGEB Group Leader
- A valid identification document
- English Certificate (TOEFL, Cambridge or similar).
