Congregationalist clergy from the Connecticut Colony founded the Collegiate School in 1701. By the time of the American Revolution, the curriculum had expanded to include the humanities and sciences after teaching ministers about religion and sacred languages.

In the 19th century, the college expanded into graduate and professional education, awarding the first PhD in the United States in 1861, and becoming a university in 1887. After 1890, Yale’s staff and student populations significantly increased as the school’s physical campus and its scientific research programs were expanded.

According to the report from the Official, Yale University has admitted 2,275 students out of 52,250  applicants of which 1,433 were admitted through the regular decision process, while 776 received early action admission, and 66 matched through the QuestBridge program. The class of 2027, has the most applicants in the school’s history. Due to the enormous number of applications received, the acceptance percentage fell to 4.35%, which is also the lowest acceptance rate recorded in the school’s history.

In the previous three years, the rate was 4.46%  for the class of 2026, 4.62% for the class of 2025, and  6.54% for the class of 2024. In recent years, the university consistently broke records for the volume of applications received in each cycle.

With 1,973 applications received and 32 students admitted, Yale’s transfer acceptance rate is 1.6%. Very few transfer students are accepted by Yale each year. But be aware that transfer students can only enroll for the Fall semester.
