The WCF Africa was established in 2016, it was designed for eligible film production companies from the aforementioned region, offering them a dedicated funding avenue for projects in the post-production phase.

World Cinema Fund (WCF) was founded in 2004, and has since evolved into a powerhouse for international film funding. Its focus extends beyond sub-Saharan Africa, covering Latin America, the Caribbean, the Pacific region, Africa, the Middle East, Central and Southeast Asia, the Caucasus, as well as specific countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Mongolia, and Sri Lanka.

This funding is a recognition of the rich storytelling heritage that sub-Saharan Africa brings to the global cinematic tapestry. To be eligible, projects must have completed a significant portion of shooting, with a rough-cut in place. An important criteria to note is the realistic expectation of project completion by October 2024.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the World Cinema Fund (WCF) Africa 2024, the conditions below must be met:

  • Only projects in the post-production phase are eligible
  • Companies must confirm collaboration with a director from the region and demonstrate their commitment to enhancing the cinematic field.
  • German companies, whether based in Germany or other EU member states, must showcase a working relationship with a director from sub-Saharan Africa.
  • EU member states’ companies need a German branch or place of business, along with a proven working relationship with a director from sub-Saharan Africa.

WCF offers a maximum funding of 40,000 Euros for post-production.

The total production costs should fall within the range of 200,000 to 1,400,000 Euros, with expenditure directed towards post-production in the specified regions.

Application Process

  • Two submission processes occur annually, with deadlines in February/March and July. Subsequently, Jury meetings follow in June/July and November, respectively.
