Nominations are currently being accepted for the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award 2024. This annual award honours individuals, groups, or organizations that demonstrate exceptional dedication and service to those compelled to leave their homes or individuals who are stateless. Since 2017, the award has also acknowledged multiple regional winners each year.

Named after the renowned Norwegian explorer and humanitarian Fridtjof Nansen, the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award seeks to exemplify Nansen’s values of resilience and commitment in challenging circumstances through its recipients.

Award

  • The global laureate for 2024 will be presented with a commemorative medal and a monetary prize of US$100,000, intended for reinvestment in the humanitarian initiatives that earned them recognition.
  • Various regional winners will receive a smaller monetary prize to further support their humanitarian endeavours.

Eligibility

Nomination is open to anyone for the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award, even if they have previously nominated an individual who did not win.

  • Candidates may include individuals, groups, or organizations.
  • Their work must directly and positively impact the lives of forcibly displaced or stateless individuals and relate to a significant displacement situation or issue.
  • This year, UNHCR particularly encourages nominations related to statelessness, climate, sports, solutions, and inclusion, but other themes are also welcome.
  • Nominees must demonstrate substantial time and effort in supporting forcibly displaced or stateless individuals, going beyond their expected roles.
  • They should possess the ability to successfully implement a suitable project with the prize money (US$100,000 for the global laureate, US$25,000 for regional winners).
  • Three strong references are required.

Selection Process

  • An independent Selection Committee is responsible for choosing the global laureate and regional winners.
  • The selection process remains strictly confidential, and information on the nomination’s status will not be disclosed.
  • The announcement of the 2024 global laureate and regional winners is scheduled for late 2024.

Nomination Requirements

Self-nominations are strongly discouraged, and current or former UNHCR employees are not eligible.

Application Deadline

The deadline for submitting nominations is midnight CET, March 20, 2024. Late submissions will not be considered.
