The 10th U.S.-ASEAN Women’s Leadership Academy for YSEALI Regional Workshop is eagerly offering an exciting opportunity for youth from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. This fully-funded workshop aims to bring together women leaders between the ages of 20 to 35 who are actively working on food security issues.

The Academy serves as a platform for young women leaders to enhance their leadership skills and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of human capital development and civic engagement. These elements are crucial in supporting their efforts to address and prevent food insecurity, as well as mitigate the impact of short-term and long-term food shortages.

The main objectives of the Academy are:

  • The aim is to support individuals in cultivating and improving their leadership abilities.
  • To deepen participants’ understanding of the unique gender-related challenges concerning food security in the region.
  • To expand the participants’ network of young female leaders from Southeast Asia who can collaborate across borders and drive collective action.
  • To provide access to funding and mentorship opportunities to support participants’ initiatives.
  • To foster a sense of unity and community among ASEAN nations.

The program will include leadership training and expert-led sessions that will delve into food security issues and related fields. As a participant, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with other female leaders from Southeast Asia and the United States on a shared project that aims to create a valuable knowledge resource. This collaboration aims to promote cross-cultural exchange and broaden the areas and impact scope in the realm of food security.

Cost Coverage

  • The U.S. State Department, together with Wedu as the implementing partner, will cover all expenses related to your participation, including travel, accommodation, and any other associated costs.

Eligibility Criteria

The following criteria must be met by applicants to be eligible for the workshop:

  • Fluent proficiency in both written and spoken English is a requirement.
  • Women aged between 20-35 years (at the time of the workshop).
  • It is required to attend the full four-day in-person workshop in April 2023, as well as participate in activities before and after the workshop from January to August 2024.
  • Must be citizens of one of the following countries- Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Vietnam and currently residing in the same country.
  • Should have relevant expertise and experience in resource management, such as water, soil, or any public health specialties related to nutrition and food safety.
  • Possess a strong desire to build communities and a keen interest in forming collaborations and partnerships with other leaders from Southeast Asian nations.
  • A valid passport that expires after October 31, 2024, is mandatory.
  • Applicants must have at least two years of relevant professional or volunteer experience in addressing food security-related issues. Various fields will be considered, including but not limited to:
    • Biotechnology
    • Agriculture
    • Trade/economics.

How to Apply For U.S.-ASEAN Women’s Leadership Academy For YSEALI 2024

  • The program will begin with virtual activities and sessions in January 2024, followed by an in-person workshop in April 2024. There will also be optional advocacy and collaborative activities available until August 2024.
