The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative Professional Fellows Program otherwise referred to as YSEALI PFP, is a fully funded exchange program hosted by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States of America. The YSEALI Professional Fellows Program provides an opportunity for emerging leaders from Southeast Asia to travel to the US and spend up to 5 to 6 weeks.

Fellows will gain invaluable fellowship experiences at non-profit, public, or private sector organizations. The aim of the YSEALI Professional Fellowship Program is to enhance mutual understanding, advance leadership and professional skills, and creates a connection for partnerships between emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the United States.

YSEALI Professional Fellows Program Details

The YSEALI Professional Fellows Program is an immersive and transformative experience that provides participants with an in-depth understanding of the United States’ social, economic, political, and cultural landscape.

Over the course of five to six weeks, fellows will engage in professionally relevant activities, connect with experts and mentors, and gain hands-on experience in their respective fields. This program is designed to empower young professionals and equip them with the necessary tools to drive positive change in their communities.

Institute Themes

The YSEALI Professional Fellows Program encompasses four distinct Institute themes, allowing participants to focus on areas aligned with their professional interests and aspirations. The four themes are:

Civic Engagement: Fellows under this theme will explore strategies for fostering active citizen participation, community development, and inclusive governance.

Economic Empowerment: This theme emphasizes economic growth, entrepreneurship, and innovation, equipping fellows with the tools to drive sustainable economic development in their home countries.

Governance and Society: Participants in this institute will delve into the dynamics of effective governance, policy formulation, and institutional reform, with an emphasis on promoting transparency and accountability.

Sustainable Development and the Environment: Fellows passionate about environmental conservation and sustainability will have the opportunity to delve into topics such as renewable energy, climate change mitigation, and conservation strategies.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The YSEALI Professional Fellows Program is open to professionals between the ages of 25 and 35
  • To be eligible, all applicants must be identified as citizens and residents of the eleven YSEALI countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Brunei, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam)
  • Applicants should possess a strong interest in the program’s themes and demonstrate a commitment to making a positive impact in their respective fields.
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken), is mandatory
  • Candidates are expected to show leadership abilities and the capacity to work collaboratively.
  • Prospective Candidates should be emerging leaders in government, civil society, or the private sector
  • Two years of relevant work experience is required for Participants
