The SAIS Female Founder Award 2024 is inviting applications from exceptional female leaders in Africa with an innovative AgTech, FoodTech, or ClimateTech business.
This award is a flagship initiative by “Scaling digital Agriculture Innovations through Start-ups” (SAIS), executed by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
SAIS Female Founder Award Details
The goals of the SAIS Female Founder Award are to increase the awareness of female-led startups and to foster a more dynamic, equal environment so that female entrepreneurs can succeed in creating unicorns in Africa and become the next “gazelles.”
The SAIS vision is to improve the food systems by being the premier community for tech ventures in developing countries. The start-ups they sponsor must offer solutions that lead to economic development, greater nutrition, or adaptation to climate change.
Eligibility Requirements for SAIS Female Founder Award 2024
To be eligible for the SAIS Female Founder Award Candidates must meet the following requirements:
Founder:
- Must be an African female who co-founded and operates a start-up/growth stage business.
- Possesses technical experience in the area of operation.
Impact:
- The applicant must promote female visionary leadership and also support other female leaders
- Contribute to women’s economic empowerment.
- Be promoting a culture that values diversity.
- The work produced must have a positive impact on solving an important problem in the industry.
- Must be contributing to start-up ecosystem development.
Team:
- The start-up should have a minimum team members of three (3). This includes the founder who works for the start-up full-time.
Digital product/ service:
- The product or service must be digital or have a strong digital component.
- The product offers an impactful solution in the AgTech, FoodTech, or ClimateTech sectors in Africa.
Legal form:
- The business is well-registered and operates on the continent of Africa.
- The business has an official certificate of registration.
Market Access and Traction:
- The company must have been registered (2 years minimum) before applying.
- The start-up has well-outlined proof of traction (customer base, revenue).
Benefits of the SAIS Female Founder Award
- The SAIS Female Founder Award ceremony, set to take place at VivaTech in Paris on 22-25 May 2024, is designed as a pitching competition.
- The three selected winners will not only have the honor of attending the event but also stand a chance to win in-kind support worth up to 30,000€ for the first place, 15,000€ for the second place, and 7,000€ for the third place.
- Winners can expect packages of in-kind support, including vouchers for special expenses like online training, software licenses, and various services.
- Personalized coaching sessions with local and international experts are part of the offering, covering areas such as marketing, investor relations, and pitching for increased visibility.
- The support extends to facilitating meaningful connections for business development and potential scaling vision, incorporating local ecosystem integration.
- All-Expenses-Paid Trip to Paris: The award includes round-trip airfare to Paris and accommodation for the entire stay at VivaTech 2024. This ensures the winners’ direct participation in the event, where a prestigious jury will announce their rankings during an on-stage ceremony. Such exposure on an international stage is invaluable for any startup.
- SAIS Female Leader Circle Community: Winners gain entry into the SAIS Female Leader Circle Community, a space where women in the startup ecosystem participate in insightful sessions with experts and peer-to-peer exchange. These monthly meetings serve as a platform for discussions, networking, and skill development, tailored to the unique challenges faced by women in the entrepreneurial realm.
