George Orwell, one of the most prominent writers of the twentieth century, not only authored influential works like Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm, but also produced exceptional journalism. He was famously a member of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), and his membership card has become an iconic image associated with his life and achievements.
The highly regarded Young Journalist’s Award, available throughout the UK, not only upholds Orwell’s legacy but also provides a fantastic opportunity for aspiring journalists to strengthen their portfolios, CVs, professional profiles, and industry connections.
Benefits
- The Award has two categories, columns and reviews, and each winner will receive a monetary prize of £1,000 along with an NUJ membership.
- The runner-up in both categories will receive a prize of £500. Additionally, winners and runners-up will be given a three-year complimentary membership to The Orwell Society.
Eligibility Criteria
- You must be a student journalist, which includes university undergraduates, post-graduates, or vocational trainees.
- You qualify if you are currently employed or self-employed as a journalist.
- In either case, you need to have been born in 1994 or later and be a full-time resident in the UK.
Judging Criteria
- Subject Knowledge Assessment (25%) – Displaying comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the chosen subject. Attention to pertinent details, including valid terms, concepts, theories, events, individuals, contexts, and information. Demonstrating depth and breadth of research through the incorporation of factual evidence, quotes, and relevant definitions/explanations.
- Intellectual Skills Evaluation (25%) – Exhibiting the ability to present a clear and persuasive standpoint through coherent and logical argumentation. Going beyond simple description by analyzing and evaluating ideas. Emphasizing critical thinking and questioning rather than relying on assumptions or clichés. Demonstrating overall proficiency in synthesizing and articulating thoughts.
- Subject-Specific Abilities (25%) – Supporting points and arguments with relevant examples and evidence. Skillfully presenting substantiated information to illustrate and enhance understanding. Utilizing credible sources and foundations rather than making unsupported claims or expressing personal opinions without basis.
- Transferable Skills Assessment (25%) – Maintaining a high standard of language use, encompassing grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary. Employing a compelling writing style that exhibits clarity, fluency, and impact. Organizing content in a structured manner that facilitates logical and systematic progression. Adhering to the specified word count and adhering to the conventions of journalistic writing.
How to Apply for Orwell Society/NUJ Young Journalist’s Award 2024
- Please submit the following tasks to the provided email address on the official website by 12:00 midnight on Sunday 7th April 2024:
- An arts review on a subject of your choice (such as a book, film, play, art exhibition, etc) with a minimum of 600 and a maximum of 700 words. Your review should include a headline and specify the target audience/publication. OR
- A column on a political topic of your choice with a minimum of 600 and a maximum of 700 words. Your column should have a headline and indicate the target audience/publication.
- A reflection of no less than 250 and no more than 300 words on how your review or column is influenced by Orwell’s work. You should explain which aspects of Orwell’s life and writings have had a significant impact on your piece.
- A covering email including your full name, address, date of birth, journalistic qualifications, and experience.
- All submissions should be in a Word file and not in PDF format. Please start each task with a cover page containing your name, date of birth, university name, program name with start and end dates, and complete contact details (address, telephone, etc.).
- The two tasks should be presented in 12 pt Times Roman font with double spacing. Each page should be numbered, and each task should end with a word count.
